Refinery Terminal Fire Company (RTFC) provides valuable resources through the unique concept of ownership by its members, including, state of the art fire protection, prevention, inspection, hazard mitigation, state of the art training, and technical support services.

RTFC, also known as “Fire Company,” was established in 1948, in the wake of the Texas City, Texas disaster, and today is the largest non-profit industrial firefighting group in the United States. The Fire Company’s goal was to provide fire department services to The Port of Corpus Christi and the related refining and petrochemical port industries.

After completion of the training facility in August of 1995, RTFC applied and was granted a 501(c) (4) non-profit status from the IRS.
RTFC currently protects over 60 individual facilities owned by 13 different corporations. They operate as a “cooperative” company as the Fire Company is funded by its members

In-Plant Program History:

On July 30, 1995, RTFC manned a full-time fire station at Lyondellbasell, LP’s world-class ethylene and olefins plant in Corpus Christi. A total of 21 fire professionals protect the plant and work RTFC’s
standard 24-hour on/48-hour off, three platoon system. Each seven-person staff consist of one Captain, one Sr. Firefighter, and five Firefighters.

On March 9, 1997, RTFC manned two full-time fire stations at Koch Petroleum Group, LP. The fire station at Koch’s (now Flint Hills Resources) West Refinery is staffed by a six person shift comprised of one Captain, one Sr. Firefighter, and four Firefighters. Koch’s East Refinery is staffed by a five person shift comprised of one Captain, one Sr. Firefighter, and three Firefighters.
In May of 1998, RTFC manned a full-time fire station at CITGO’s Corpus Christi Refinery. A total of 15 fire professionals protect the plant. One Captain, one Senior Firefighter, and three Firefighters
staff each of the three shifts.

In February 2001, RTFC manned a full-time fire station at Lyondellbasell, LP’s, ethylene and olefins
plant in Chocolate Bayou, Texas. A total of 18 fire professionals and one Assistant Chief protect the plant. One Captain, one Senior Firefighter, and four Firefighters staff each of the three shifts. The Plant ceased operations in the fall of 2010 due to economic downturn.

In March 2008, RTFC manned a full-time fire station at Flint Hills Resources Chemical Facility in Port Arthur, Texas. A total of 18 fire professionals and one Deputy Fire Chief protect the plant. One Captain, and five Firefighters staff each of the three shifts.

In July 2013, RTFC signed a contract to man a full-time fire station at Mississippi Power Company
in Meridian, Mississippi. A total of 15 fire professionals and one Division Chief will protect the facility. One Captain and 4 Firefighters will staff each of the three shifts.
